Homemade Washing Powder Recipe

I’ve recently started making my own washing powder, thanks to a recipe from wonderful Wellness Mama.  I do use soap nuts, but quite fancied giving something else a try.

Dr BronnersIt is super simple, all you need to do is mix the following together and store in an airtight container.  I blended it together in my magimix to try blend grated soap more, but I don’t think you have to do that.

2 parts washing soda
2 parts borax
1 part grated soap

Wellness Mama recommends 1/8 to 1/4 cup per load.

I bought the washing soda and borax from Soap Barn, and I used Dr Bronner’s castile soap. South Africans could try castile soap from Faithful to Nature.

I add 1/2 – 1 cup vinegar to my rinse cycle instead of using commercial softener. Anyone who knows my husband knows I need a really good stain remover, I am still working on this one, unfortunately Vanish is my best friend in this department.  Still searching for an alternative! Watch this space …

P.S: If you can’t find washing soda – you can make it from your bicarb.  Just bake it in a tray at 200degC.  More details on Natures Nuture blog.

  1. I’m all for zero-waste washing, and found and tried this recipe. Unfortunately I had a horrible allergic reaction to it. Have you experienced this or have heard of alternatives? I’m not sure if it was the borax, the soda, or both.
